Description
Introducing the National Audubon Society line of native plants and trees that are geared to help birds and wildlife thrive in your area! The great Audubon® Native BoElder Tree (Acer negundo) is a member of the Maple family, known for their opposite, compound foliage and faster-growing nature!
Known by many names, Boxelder, Ash-Leafed Maple or BoElder, its branches burst into spring with unique yellowish-green flowers and reddish stems. But all summer, enjoy lush, light green foliage and loose, open branching that can reach up to 65’ tall!
Fall brings another season of interest with bright yellow fall hues and clusters of winged seeds that cling through winter. With a smooth bark that lights up winter with its gray-brown hue. The samara seeds are a favorite among birds, rodents and squirrels!
Planting and Application:
Lush and fast-growing shade trees, BoElder tolerates a wide range of growing conditions, even in occasionally soggy lowlands. Plant in an open sunny site to shade your garden beds, patio and add a hardy native specimen tree!
Very bushy and multi-branched, you can prune BoElder into a single-trunk specimen tree or retain the lower limbs and use these for fast screening and hedgerows and windbreak planting additions for habitat. Known to form thickets in the wild, BoElder creates great groupings and wildlife shelterbelts!
