The ridges and blocky texture of the Hackberry’s trunk features a distinctive, corky appearance, adding ornamental interest to the barren winter landscape, as do the tiny berries. People too can snack on the small, dark purple edible berries. The drupes have a somewhat date-like flavor and were traditionally used by Native Americans as a food source.

Great for windy areas you can grow a Hackberry as a very tough, fast-growing shade tree. Beautiful fall color, these native trees, are fantastic additions to edible wildcrafted food gardens and eco-sensitive landscapes!

Planting and Application:

Hackberry trees are fantastic Shade or street trees because of their strength, tolerance and fairly quick growth. They can be pruned smaller for use as privacy and shelterbelt, windbreaks and hedges. Or, plant one in your yard for its shade and seasonal interest, especially if you have a place where the soil is too poor for other trees.

This gives your feathered friends plenty of nesting, cover and shelter, insects and fruits for food all year long! The berries are a vital food source for birds all autumn and winter, while the limbs are great shelter, nesting and cover!
