Description

Dramatic and unexpected color combo, the Halkis Dutch Iris (Iris hollandica ‘Halkis’) is a powder blue Iris with a showy splash of white, speckled in purple on the lower falls. This white and purple band has a center stripe of yellow. But then the lower half of each lower petal transitions into an eye-catching wine-colored tip for a vibrant detail that pulls you in for a closer look!

The intricate patterns and blend of color make Halkis Iris a showstopper in the spring garden! Backed with a flourish of sword-like vertical green leaves, these clump-forming perennial bulbs gradually spread and colonize small clusters throughout the landscape.

Halkis Dutch Iris are hardy throughout USDA planting zones 5 to 9, making them cold and heat hardy. Despite how showy and dramatic these multi-colored Dutch Iris, are, they are tiny plants growing just 6 to 8 inches tall when in bloom! However, their power-packed color combo more than makes up for their size!

Planting and Application:

These Dwarf Dutch Iris are fantastic container specimens and absolutely gorgeous when used en masse and in long, winding rows so their color can really shine. In more intimate settings and small courtyards, groupings and rows equally show off their vibrant color.

Indoors, gardeners in every growing zone can force these bulbs and enjoy them as winter decor and relief from the winter doldrums! Place the bulbs in a shallow tray, glass cloche, or in a special pot to brighten your indoor spaces!

Outdoors, Halkis Dutch Iris are ideal bed and border edging, bringing in pollinators, and lighting up the spring Cottage border and Rock garden!

ProPlantTips for Care:

Dwarf Dutch Iris should be planted in the fall in a sunny, well-drained location that won’t become soggy, but remains moderately moist. Top-dress with a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch chips to help retain moisture and protect the bulbs (unlike other Irises that grow from rhizomes and like to be partially exposed.).

Every few years divide the bulb clumps and clean out any older, non-productive bulbs to maintain vigor. Deadhead the flowers after they fade, but keep the leaves to make food for the bulb. Prune away the foliage after it yellows to the ground.
