The Yellow Spider Lily Aurea Lycoris (Lycoris ‘Aurea’) is an exotic bold golden-yellow member of the Amaryllis family member with unusual twisting, curling slender leaves and long sprays of stamen, giving them their ‘spider’ name.

These unusual perennial bulbs have a curious lifecycle that involves their fountains of strappy long green leaves showing up throughout the early parts of the growing season. The leaves shine for a while then seem to vanish. Then out of the blue, the dramatic frilly blooms appear out of seemingly nowhere in August to September!

This has given the Yellow Aurea Lycoris and their relatives names like Naked Ladies, Magic Lilies, and Surprise Lily! Their appearance after heavy rain in the fall also gave rise to common names like Hurricane Lily and Resurrection Lily! Loving the heat and humidity of USDA planting zones 8 to 10 where they are considered hardy perennials, these exotic blooms do need winter protection in zones 5 to 7.

Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 5-10, Aurea Lycoris flowering stems can reach up to 18 inches tall. Fast-growing and loving full sun for the best flowering and bulb health, plant Lycoris bulbs in very well-drained, enriched soil with moderate regular moisture availability. They love mulched beds but also drying out a bit between waterings.

Once the flower heads fade, go ahead and deadhead them to the ground. Once the foliage yellows later in the growing season, trim it back and remove it from the area. Because of this perennial bulb’s unique lifecycle, place a marker in your soil so you know where to expect the foliage and flowers throughout the season.
